About two hours before the official opening night of All’s Well that Ends Well last night, the Shakespeare Theatre had a dinner for their patrons and board members, during which they introduced a new award, the Emery Battis Award,
for achievement in acting over the season.
A committee from the board voted, and Michael Hayden, who played Henry V and Richard II in repertory over the winter was one recipient; and I was the other, for my work in The Liar.
Michael Kahn (right, with me) said some lovely things about us at the dinner, and Michael Hayden and I both gave short speeches thanking people.
Blurgh. This is the best photo I could take of a glass trophy. It’ll look great next to my 1987 baseball MVP trophy and Jabba the Hutt figure on my mantel. If I had a mantel.
One more accolade, however: The Shakespeare Theatre has made both Miriam and me Affiliated Artists with the theater, which means we may be returning a bit more in DC over the years...
My attempts to hypnotize the audience with my mustache didn’t work.
